The "We Are America" project is set to continue a ten-year traditiion by Mano a Mano of helping Immigrant Americans to become Active American Citizens in fall of 2007.

The purpose of this project is "to empower immigrant Americans to become active citizens of their new homeland, thru Naturalization, Volunteerism, and Civic Participation."

Immigrant Americans contribute so much to our nation's economy - not to mention to the economy of Salem-Keizer - but they could still contribute more by becoming full citizens of their new homeland, and by being active citizens in the world's greatest democratic society.

Immigrant Americans will have access to free consultations with local immigration attorneys, U.S. Citizenship Preparation courses, and English as a Second Language courses and tutoring. Mano a Mano has been offering these services now for nearly ten years, making ours one of the longest-lasting programs in the State of Oregon.

These programs will now be offered in conjunction with community education with the objective of instilling in these new citizens the importance of volunteerism and community service, thru Civic Participation. As active citizens, these individuals can help to improve the quality of life of their communities thru participation in the voting process, neighborhood associations, local school committees, etc.

Mano a Mano will be partnering with other local organizations such as Latinos Unidos Siempre, and Voz Hispana. Voz Hispana has been the leading Latino organization for grassroots voter registration, and Latinos Unidos Siempre has a proven track record in registering new young voters.

This project expects to reach approximately 250 new citizens annually.
